Cornell rolls past Bucknell in 45-13 rout
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Jeff Mathews threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns as Cornell overcame an early deficit to rout Bucknell 45-13 in its non-conference season opener at home Saturday.
The Ivy League's Big Red (1-0) trailed 10-0 in the first quarter, but roared back in the second quarter as Mathews threw touchdown passes to Chris Lenz and Lucas Shapiro to take a 17-13 lead.
Cornell pulled ahead in the third quarter on Mathews' 14-yard strike to Luke Hagy.
Tre' Minor and Jarrod Watson-Lewis each returned fumbles for a touchdown in the third to fuel the rout.
Shapiro finished with 113 yards receiving on five catches.
CJ Williams ran for 148 yards on 30 carries for Bucknell (1-1, Patriot League).
Brandon Wesley went 7-for-16 with 118 yards and an interception.
The Cornell victory was the first for David Archer, 30, the youngest head coach in Division I Football.
