Day kicks Gardner-Webb to 12-10 win over Richmond
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Jordan Day's 30-yard field goal with 25 seconds left gave Gardner-Webb a 12-10 win over Richmond on Saturday night.
Michael Strauss, who completed 28 of 43 passes for 303 yards, found Sam Roller for his only touchdown pass of the game, giving Richmond (1-2) a 10-9 lead with 2:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.
J.J. Hubbard returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards to the Richmond 47 yard line where the Gardner-Webb (2-1) offense took over.
Two plays later, on third and 9, Lucas Beatty hit Demarcus White for a 24-yard gain. Following two incomplete passes, Beatty connected with Richard Jules on a 9-yard throw and catch to the Richmond 13.
Day then connected on the game-winning kick, his fourth field goal of the day.
Stephen Barnette had 12 receptions for 182 yards but Richmond had just 10 yards rushing and converted only 4 of 13 third down chances.
