Delta State beats Mississippi Valley State 24-14
ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Travis Champion threw for two touchdowns and Delta State held off a Mississippi Valley State University's fourth-quarter rally to win 24-14 on Saturday.
Trailing 7-3 in the third quarter, Champion connected with Casey Osborne on a 13-yard pass to give Delta State the lead, and hit Osborne again on a 10-yarder early in the fourth quarter to pull away 17-7.
MSVU (0-2) responded with a 10-yard TD pass from Jeremy Collins to Richard Drake and were threatening to score on an ensuing drive when Collins threw an interception.
Delta State (0-1) mounted a drive on its next possession and Timothy Foy iced the game with a 10-yard touchdown.
The Statesmen were plagued by turnovers -- Champion threw two interceptions, a fake kick by Justin Holt was intercepted and the offense fumbled three times, losing possession once. Champion was 19 of 30 on the night, for 225 yards passing.
