Nicholls State 54, Cheyney State 0

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) -- Nicholls State's running back Dwayne Jones

rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Colonels in a

54-0 drubbing of Cheyney during a driving rainstorm Saturday.

Of the Colonels' 421 total yards, 395 came on the ground. Zach

Morgan rushed for 56 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback

Vincent Montgomery chipped in 24 yards and two more touchdowns.

Nicholls' defense held Division II Cheyney (2-2) to a minus-5

yards total offense. The leading ground gainer for the Wolves was

Billy Mitchell, who had 16 yards on 12 carries. Meanwhile,

quarterback Lamar Hyson was just 3-of-10 for seven yards.

Cheyney is now 0-5 against Division I-AA competition.

The Wolves managed to penetrate Nicholls' territory only twice

in the game, both off Colonel turnovers. Cheyney's deepest drive

brought them to the Colonel 18 after a turnover, but the Wolves

failed to capitalize when they fumbled two plays later.

Special teams also played a big part in the win for Nicholls

(1-1). A tackle of the Cheyney punter after a bad snap early in the

game set up the Colonels' first score, while a 45-yard punt return

by Jermaine Boggan set up another score early in the second half.

Nicholls State quarterback Yale Vannoy was 5-of-6 for 26 yards

and one interception.
