Monmouth closes season with 23-9 win over Gardner-Webb
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Cody Williams threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns, including a 49-yard strike to Darren Ambush in the first quarter, to help lead Monmouth (NJ) to a 23-9 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
Zach Welch added 80 yards rushing on 10 carries with a TD, and Reggie White Jr. finished with a 36-yard TD reception for Monmouth (5-6, 3-3 Big South Conference), who closed out its season with back-to-back wins.
The Hawks scored twice in the first quarter and never looked back taking a 14-3 lead at the half and a 21-9 lead after three. Monmouth's final points came when Tre Nelson sacked Gardner-Webb quarterback Tyrell Maxwell in the end zone for a safety.
All nine Runnin' Bulldogs points came off the foot of Paul Schumacher, who hit field goals of 35, 33, and 20 yards, respectively.
Maxwell had 87 yards passing and 79 rushing for Gardner-Webb (4-7, 2-4).
