Despite what some considered a troubling lead-up to Florida's national signing day, Jim McElwain was able to bring in a pretty solid class.
He hit the defensive line and the secondary especially hard, and that's where this class will make its most immediate impact. Some will look at juco transfer Kyree Campbell, who could fill right in for the departed Caleb Brantley, but Florida's biggest impact player won't be on campus until the summer.
That's when ESPN 300 safety Brad Stewart will enroll.
Now, some might immediately point to incoming ESPN 300 athlete Christopher Henderson, who looks primed to be a pretty impressive cornerback for the Gators in the future, but Stewart might be more ready to play than his classmate. Plus, Florida's corner spot has a lot of bodies coming back, even if this won't be the most experienced group on the field.
While Henderson mostly played on the offensive side of the ball in high school, Stewart was one of Louisiana's top defensive backs, playing both safety and corner for McDonogh 35 High School in New Orleans. He's already more polished in the secondary than Henderson, who could turn out to be a stud as well. Stewart is incredibly instinctual, has great size and length, and isn't afraid to play in the box to inflict contact or split up out wide in one-on-one situations.
Stewart looks like he'll be more of a safety for the Gators, and while Marcell Harris and Nick Washington both are back at the safety spots, Stewart should push both of them for playing time and has the ability to play at the nickel spot too. That's important, as Duke Dawson should move from nickel to boundary corner with starters Teez Tabor and Quincy Wilson both gone. With that nickel spot possibly up for grabs, Stewart has a real shot of seeing extensive time there as well this fall. Regardless, he's too talented not to see the field on defense in some capacity this fall.
