ESPN 300 offensive guard Brandon Kennedy was presented with his Under Armour All-America Game jersey Thursday afternoon in a ceremony sponsored by American Family Insurance. The ceremony took place in front of family, friends, teammates, classmates and school faculty on the campus of Wetumpka High in Alabama.
Being selected for 2015 Under Armour All-America Game, to be played Jan. 2 on ESPN2, fulfills a dream of Kennedy’s since he was a youth.
“It’s an honor,” Kennedy said. “I’ve wanted to be an Under Armour All-American since I was younger when I watched the game on TV. I remember watching the game and wanting to just be a part of it,”
While the honor is a big one personally for the No. 102-ranked prospect in the country, this is just as big for his school and players that will come through Wetumpka High in the future.
“Everybody was happy for me. My coaches, teammates, friends and family were all excited. It’s great [for the school]. Hopefully I can help get our school noticed and it helps players in the future get looked at, and in the Under Armour Game.”
Kennedy committed to Alabama July 18 over Auburn, but has continued to stay in contact with the Tigers and made an unofficial visit in early October.
Kennedy, who could play guard or center at the next level, is one of 11 Alabama commitments set to play in the 2015 Under Armour All-America Game joining No. 16 Blake Barnett, No. 21 Calvin Ridley, No. 27 Minkah Fitzpatrick, No. 53 Daylon Charlot, No. 57 Lester Cotton, No. 73 Hale Hentges, No. 94 Deionte Thompson, No. 125 Shawn Burgess-Becker, No. 130 Richie Pettibon and No. 163 Joshua McMillon.
Eight questions with Brandon Kennedy:
Is there any one player you are looking forward to competing against at the Under Armour All-America Game and practices?
Kennedy: Probably Daron Payne. He’s a very good DT. I have gone against him in camps, but I want to see what it’s like to go against him with the pads on.
If you were to start a team with any other player in your class, who would it be and why?
Kennedy: I would probably say Blake Barnett. He’s a great quarterback, and a great player to start a team with.
Who is the best player to ever play in the Under Armour game that you know of?
Kennedy: Jadeveon Clowney. He’s just a freak. You could easily see how talented he was when he dominated all of the talent he went against in the Under Armour Game in 2011.
What is your earliest football memory?
Kennedy: I would have to say back in little league. We had a team go undefeated; I think when I was 9 or 10.
Which football player did you idolize or want to be like when you were a kid?
Kennedy: I liked Antoine Caldwell when he as at Alabama. He was just a great player. Most of all he was a center and dominated. I like his style of play.
If you could take on any pro player in their sport, who would it be?
Kennedy: Whew, that’s a tough one. I would probably say Ndamukong Suh. He’s a very physical and athletic player. He’s a guy I would like to test his talent level compared to mine.
What number do you wear and why?
Kennedy: I wear 73. I have no special reason for wearing it. I would actually like to wear somethings in the 50’s in college.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Kennedy: I have a keen interest in psychology. I just like studying how the mind works, and how the brain works.
